Get Cited by ChatGPT and AI Search
Customers now ask AI for recommendations instead of scrolling ten blue links. Here is how to make ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode understand and cite your business in 2026.
Why this matters now. A growing share of buying research starts inside an AI assistant. If those tools cannot understand your site, they cannot recommend you, and you never even know you were left out of the answer.
What "getting cited by AI" actually means
When someone asks an AI tool "what is the best barber in Salt Lake City" or "who builds restaurant websites in Utah," the tool does not show a page of links. It writes an answer, in sentences, and often names specific businesses with a citation link. Getting cited means the AI understood your business well enough to put you in that answer. This practice has a name: generative engine optimization, or GEO.
The checklist: what makes AI cite you
- An LLMs.txt file that maps your key pages for AI systems
- Structured data (schema) describing your business, services, and FAQs
- Clean, semantic, accessible HTML that machines can parse
- Clear, factual, question-and-answer style content
- Consistent business details (name, area served, contact) across the site
- Mentions and citations from other credible sites
1. Add an LLMs.txt file
LLMs.txt is a plain markdown file at your domain root that hands AI systems a curated map of your most important pages with a one-line description of each. Think of it as a table of contents written for machines. It is one of the highest-leverage, lowest-effort things you can do, and we offer it as a standalone add-on from $89 for sites we did not build.
2. Mark up your business with schema
Structured data (JSON-LD schema) tells AI and search engines exactly what your business is, what you offer, where you serve, and what people ask. LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage schema turn vague page text into facts a model can extract and cite with confidence.
3. Keep the HTML clean and accessible
AI agents read the same underlying structure that a screen reader does. Semantic headings, real links, labeled forms, and a clean accessibility tree all make your site easier for machines to understand. This is why ADA compliance and AI readability go together, and why agent-ready architecture and WebMCP-annotated forms matter.
4. Write for the question, not the keyword
Models pull answers from content that reads like an answer. Structure pages around the real questions customers ask, give direct factual responses, and keep claims specific. A clear FAQ section does double duty: it helps humans and gives AI clean, quotable facts.
5. Be consistent and be mentioned
Say the same thing about your business everywhere: the same name, the same service area, the same contact path. Inconsistent details make models unsure, and unsure models leave you out. Legitimate mentions and links from other credible sites reinforce that you are a real, established business worth citing.
How to check if AI knows you
Test it yourself. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity and ask for the best option in your category and city, then ask about your business by name. If the answers are vague, outdated, or missing, your site is not giving these tools enough signal yet. For more on how discovery shifted, read how Google changed search.
Do it yourself, or have it built in
You can add most of this yourself over time. If you would rather it be handled, every VIBE89 build ships agent-ready by default: LLMs.txt, schema, clean structure, and accessibility, standard, at no extra charge. Already have a site? We can add the agent-ready layer without a full rebuild, starting with LLMs.txt from $89.
